This course is offered to enable you to care for patients with urinary catheters competently and with confidence, whilst reducing the risk of infection or undue discomfort for the patient. Urinary Catheterisation & Catheter Care learning is suitable for all staff including Medical & Nursing staff, Midwives, Hospital Aides and Allied Health staff (whilst remaining within individual scopes of practice).

Objectives

  • Provide necessary information and ensure patient safety
  • Communicate with the patient in a way which reduces anxiety
  • Understand the rationale for catheterisation
  • Understand the importance of aseptic technique and infection prevention
  • Identify potential problems when performing catheterisation and remedial action to be taken
  • Discuss catheter care and catheter maintenance
  • Understand the rationale for the decision to remove an indwelling catheter
  • Aware of the comprehensive documentation relating to the procedure of catheterisation

Course Instructions

  • Each module contains a set of questions that pertains to the Catheter Care Guidelines, 2013
  • Print off the guidelines or have them open to view
  • Complete the questions for each module (100% pass)
  • Once completed you will be able to print off a certificate of completion
  • Professional development hours or equivalent will only be awarded on completion of all modules
