New/Updated Falls Course

Falls are the leading cause of injury during hospitalisations for older adults (65+ years) and for injury related deaths in this age group. The learning module covers all aspects of falls and injury prevention in all adult age groups, inclusive of risk analysis and preventive measures.

This package is designed to provide an introduction to fall prevention for health care workers and health care professionals working in primary, residential care and in hospital facilities. It can be utilised alongside facilities or communities own fall prevention promotion/education and any policies and orientation on fall prevention. The goal of the Self Learning package is to equip you with practical knowledge on fall prevention to use in practice to ultimately reduce falls in your facilities and communities. You are able to contribute collectively to preventing falls in our communities and facilities with your direct work with people.


Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this learning module staff should be able to:

  • Provide an outline of peoples' individual risk factors to take into account when planning actions to reduce their risk of falling
  • Provide an outline of environmental factors to consider when caring for a person in their environment (or new environment) so these can be managed appropriately
  • Demonstrate how to discuss the persons' individual falls risk with them and their whanau/carer, to improve the person (and whanau’s) knowledge and perceptions of their risk/s for falling and motivate them to assist in prevention measures
  • Support the translation of a persons risk factors into action plans to minimise a persons' risk of falling
